I was not aware there was an attempt by California lawmakers to put together universal health care for its citizens — something they call "Medicare for all". It was called Senate Bill 810 but it failed to get through. 19 of 34 lawmakers voted for it but they needed 21 votes to get through.
There was a version that won legislative approval but was vetoed by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
California has an illegal immigrant problem. They have a welfare problem. An unemployment problem. They do not need the burden of universal health care on their budgets as well.
As a California resident, I would love to have free healthcare so that it is no longer a burdensome line-item from my budget BUT healhcare costs could as much as double or triple if it were free because everybody will use it. That is going to come out of my taxes.
We have also seen how great California has been in running things. Case in point, the state parks face massive cutbacks every year. Imagine that kind of poor management running our hospitals.
According to the article, it is doubtful there will be any progress with this bill for the rest of the year. Good. If taxes in this state are raised anymore, I may have to move to another state for a better quality of life.
