The battle against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria is underway. President Donald Trump has just agreed to send a deployment of Marines to Syria. This Marine Expeditionary Unit will be there under other existing authorities and are there just to act as support. This is a fantastic strategy by the United States for fighting ISIS without directly putting U.S. troops on the front lines. This technique has been called ‘more time consuming’ but ‘effective’. The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit will be going from the Mediterranean to a undisclosed Syrian location in an attempt to aid a mounting an assault of Kurdish and Arab fighters on Raqqa, the self-proclaimed Islamic State capital in Syria.
From Washington Examiner:
The Marines deployed with M777 Howitzers, which have the capability to lob 155-millimeter shells at targets up to 20 miles away with pinpoint accuracy. Votel said the addition of the artillery unit was designed to provide “redundant, capable fire-support to local partners.” Asked whether the Marine deployment signaled that the offensive to liberate Raqqa was imminent, Votel said he would not discuss timelines of future operations.
