Mariah Carey has sold over 200 million records across the world. Unfortunately, after her New Year’s Eve performance, she may find her 2017 to not be as exciting as the previous year.
Carey headlined the festivities on ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.”
As she segued from “Auld Lang Syne” to her #1 hit song, “Emotions,” she appeared to have forgotten the words.
Instead of singing, the Grammy-award winning artist strolled across the stage making an array of excuses — ranging from problems with vocals to her vacation time. She said:
“I want a holiday, too. Can I not have off?”
As her dancers proved the “show must go on,” Carey seemed unfazed as she rested on her laurels and told the crowd:
“We didn’t have a check for this song. So we’ll just say it went to number one and that’s what it is.”
In between excuses and ramblings, Carey sang one or two seemingly off-key notes. Americans who tuned into the live broadcast of the event quickly noticed the botched performance.
Campus Reform contributor, Cabot Phillips, highlighted one of the most recent deaths in 2016:

One user compared it something that all college students can relate to:
when you didn't do any work for the group project and it's your turn to present a slide https://t.co/L7Kcj8Gm3h
Others used it to make fun of the Russia hacking incident:
I think Russia hacked Mariah Carey's microphone. Knock it off Putin, you're taking it a bit too far…

One person highlighted a karaoke problem of the ages:
I tried to sing along to Mariah Carey but even Mariah Carey can't sing along to Mariah Carey

At the end of her performance, Carey said, “it just doesn’t get any better.” Here’s hoping 2017 will prove Mariah Carey wrong.
