Sergeant Mike Smith was one of the five police officers murdered at a peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration. Black Lives Matter was protesting the police’s use of lethal force against African-Americans. Micah Xavier Johnson said that he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers. Johnson was killed by police after a long stand-off in a Dallas parking garage.
On his way out the door to go to work, Sergeant Mike Smith kissed his daughter goodbye. He said to 9-year-old Caroline, “What if this is the last time you ever kiss me or hug me?”
It is sad that the last words a father spoke to his daughter were so eerily true. In an interview, Caroline said that her father had never said anything like that to her before. She said that she felt that something bad was going to happen. Who could have predicted what the end of the day would bring?
