FBI Director James B. Comey said that although he is not going to recommend any charges, Hillary Clinton showed “extreme carelessness” in her email practices. He said that there were seven classified email messages that she knew where classified but denied ever having sent or received any classified material. He also said that she checked her email server from Europe which could have given hackers the opportunity to get into her server. We guess on a scale of zero to grossly negligent, extreme carelessness is about a two for Director Comey.
Director Comey said that there was “evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information,” but that “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.” Essentially, Comey is saying that although Clinton probably committed a crime, no prosecutor would take the case to court. Attorney General Loretta Lynch had previously stated that she would abide by the FBI’s recommendation, so, Clinton walks away from this one. Donald Trump posted on social media, “The system is rigged. General Petraeus got in trouble for far less. Very very unfair! As usual, bad judgment.”
The Federalist Papers Project reports:
Comey said that Clinton showed “extreme carelessness” in being involved in seven e-mails that were not only classified, but were marked classified at the time – something she repeatedly denied.
He also said that she used personal email overseas where they could have been breached, and that hostile actors had gained access to people that Hillary Clinton emailed. Saying thereby, great likelihood that it may have been compromised.
