A Virginia dentist let a Muslim employee go after he discovered something she hid from him during her job interview and her first two days of work.
When Chuck Joo of Fair Oaks Dental Care in Fairfax County, hired Najaf Khan to work in his office, she came to work as most people who work in medical offices do – in scrubs.
However, on her third day of employment, Khan came to work wearing a hijab, a headscarf female Muslims wear.
Joo asked Khan to remove the hijab and presented her with an ultimatum – remove the hijab or lose her job.
“When I said that I would not compromise my religion for that, he held the door open for me and I walked out,” Khan said, reported WRC-TV
Joo told WRC-TV that he doesn’t allow open displays of religion at his business because he wants to keep the atmosphere neutral.
He added if his employees wanted to wear a hat, it needed to be a surgical one for sanitary purposes.
The Council on American Islamic Relations responded, saying, “No employee should face termination because of his or her faith or religious practices. We call on Fair Oaks Dental Care to reinstate the Muslim employee and to offer her reasonable religious accommodation as mandated by law.”
It’s unfortunate that things had to work out this way. had Khan been honest about her intention of wearing her hijab to work, and wore it during her interview with Joo, this scenario would more than likely not have happened
Whether it is true or not, it appears as though Khan intentionally planned to deceive Joo, which would understandably upset anybody.
